Gm wins order for 1,200 Chevrolet Express CNG Vans from AT&T
General Motors (GM) has received an order from AT&T for 1,200 Chevrolet Express compressed natural gas (CNG) dedicated cargo vans to be deployed at its service centers nationwide.
AT&T said that the purchase is part of its plan to invest up to $565m on 15,000 alternative fuel vehicles over 10 years through 2018.
The vehicles will be used to provide and maintain communications, internet and TV services for AT&T customers.
AT&T said that the CNG vehicles, which can produce 25% fewer carbon dioxide emissions than similar gasoline and diesel-powered vans, are a cost-effective way for them to reduce its fleet-based carbon emissions.
GM general manager of fleet and commercial operations Brian Small said there are millions of fleet vehicles on the road today and the company wants to be a critical part of this sustainable revolution, helping make these conversions as easy as possible.
CNG vans are powered by a Vortec 6.0L V8 engine, which features hardened exhaust valves, intake and exhaust valve seats with gaseous fuel systems.
The automaker said that the compressed natural gas option is available for order on Chevrolet Express 2500 and 3500 cargo vans.
